    Machines of Love and Grace

Machines of Love and Grace is a comic book scripted by my daughter, Izzy Barlow, that she’s been kind enough to let me have a go at illustrating.

Machines of Love and Grace Cover Girl

Izzy Barlow is an aspiring writer, and I’m a wannabe comic book illustrator who hasn’t illustrated much in the way of comics since I had Phoenix Square published by Slave Labor Graphics. Izzy and I had a great time at the Comics Art Festival in Kendal last year and I’ve been inspired to try my hand again at my favourite art form. We decided to produce five black and white pages and a cover to see how we got along – and it has certainly been a challenge. I’ve used the experience as a chance to learn more about using Manga Studio, which I’m favouring more and more as the best software for producing line art illustration.

About Machines of Love and Grace

The story concerns a group of youngsters surviving in a post war, steampunk world, full of odd Victoriana-inspired technology. Our protagonists live onboard an airship and amongst them is a girl possessing a form of magic; a secret talent they must keep forever hidden from the authorities for fear of of their lives.

    And then what?

I think that this is a good start; although there are lots of things I’d redraw given the chance. Who knows what will happen next? Certainly Izzy has been tight lipped, though she has already rejected my request for robots and dinosaurs to invade on page 6.

    Free Range Crumpet

Free Range Crumpet is an illustration for a tee shirt. Based on a random conversation (and worked into a concept by Ian Longstaff and then a design by yours truly), this flour and yeast based character treads a fine line between fun and flirty and griddle cake. The line work was done in Manga Studio, currently my absolute favourite place for making lines, and then coloured in photoshop.

‘Crumpetta’ went through many versions before arriving at this cheeky little pastry.

This may be the first in a series of exclusive apparel, so if you fancy a Free Range Crumpet tee of your own, let me know in the comments below and I’ll let you know when we’re in production.

Merry Christmas from the Xmas Terrier

Not as jolly as the Easter Beagle, this is an illustration out of necessity. Lots of people have very cute dogs that can wear a hat. We have a dog that eats hats. And slippers…

..and here’s the film from last year’s present giving.

  • Bootstrap Breakpoint Wallpaper

    Bootstrap Breakpoint Wallpaper

    Merry Christmas everybody.

Here’s a freebie for coders who use Twitter’s css bootstrap framework. The bootstrap breakpoint wallpaper shows the major bootstrap breakpoints for your Mac (or PC) with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. I use this as my wallpaper whilst developing so I can quickly resize my browser or code editor preview to the right width. I certainly find it useful and I’d love to know if anyone else does. If you are on a mac, set your menu bar to translucent and you’ll find the pixel numbers ghosted at the top of your screen, which I think is enough of a reminder.

My old mac is showing it’s age and obviously has a lower resolution than a lot of modern machines – if there’s demand I’m open to doing some larger version.

    Usage

If you’re designing a responsive site (good lord, why wouldn’t you?) with bootstrap, just place your browser or code editing preview window in the top left of your screen and drag to the breakpoints on the wallpaper.

    Choices

The bootstrap breakpoint wallpaper is available with and without late night coder’s coffee stain.
