Creating Comics at the Burnley Literary Festival

Creating Comics was a workshop I ran as part of the Burnley Literary Festival. I was invited as a result of my recently published comic, Freedom Scorned (available from comixology submit). The event took place in the basement of the Mechanics Theatre on the 31st October and, I think, went splendidly, thanks to enthusiastic and talented attendees.

    Creating Comics the GingerJam way

I took the opportunity to pen a short script,  a fun story based in a spookier, more cursed version of the very venue we were in. Halloween was that very same day, so my tale involved some classic monsters from literature coming to life.

Participants spent the first half of the session designing characters from the script, before being assigned pages for an intense hour of drawing and inking. It was fascinating to see how each person approached a page or scene – and how they envisaged the characters I had written. Some of the participants had little or no comics experience, yet produced exciting, dynamic, artwork.

    A Burnley Literary Festival exclusive!

Here it is, a fresh piece of sequential art, from the Burnley Literary Festival:

    Prehistoric daubs at 22b

I had a primal, neandarthal life drawing session at Studio 22b this week.

The theme for the session was prehistoric cave drawing. In keeping with the concept I left the ipad pro in my bag and went to it armed with nothing but earthy coloured charcoal.

Lots of excellent, dynamic poses from the model and appropriate cave/mood lighting empowered my inner caveman to scrawl.

    Ginger Jam Comics

I’m branching out, with the launch of Ginger Jam Comics. This may sound rather grand, especially as right now I have a total of one self published book (actually, hurrah!  I have a book). Issue One of Freedom Scorned is available now from comixology Submit. I also have a mini-site right here on gingerjam.co.uk.

Freedom Scorned is a the tale of Eric, a man who makes a terrible mistake and falls for the charms of the fire demon that lives in his mirror. More importantly, its the tale of Dawn, his wife, who is not at all happy the situation.

Comics has always been my ambition. I even had  a 200 page book, Phoenix Square, published by slave labor graphics, back in the day. It’s taken me a while to get back into it.

If you are interested, please try issue 1. You can also sign up for email news and keep up-t0-date with my progress.

Ginger Jam Comics – into the future

Comixology require you to have a publisher’s logo and name, hence Ginger Jam Comics. For the immediate future I only have Freedom Scorned planned, of which currently I’m inking issue 2, polishing the words on issue 3 and have 4 all planned. Beyond that? Eric and Dawn live in a strange little town, full of magic and possibility…

So, let’s pop the virtual champagne, as my book is virtually available!

    Dancers at Drink and Draw

All the layers switched on at once, makes for a dynamic, futurist montage.

Fantastic nights drawing at drink and draw with enthusiastic, if occasionally fidgety, young models showing off a range of dancing skills.

ipad Pro now seems like the only drawing implement I’d ever want. It’s top draw… I’m using Procreate, keeping to one tool, the 6b pencil, which is ever so flexible especially when the pencil is on its side for shading.

I had layers and layers of fun…

And then was able to develop a more finished ‘illustration’ right on top of my original sketch.

I think we all found it a little difficult to draw youngsters. Most of my sketches look more like teens than tweens – so that’s something to work on another time…
