    de Lempicka at Studio 22b

I took the iPad Pro along to life drawing – a session inspired by the work Tamara de Lempicka,  at Studio 22b.

    Life1

iPad Pro is a great drawing tool, alongside the Apple pencil and Procreate app. Taking it to a life drawing session was a really good test – it allowed me all the flexibility of working on a computer (all the undoes – all the colours and layers) with a portability and convenience that’s even better than my sketchpad and pencils.

And… you get an action replay.

It was an inspiring choice of artist – Tamara de Lempicka’s work really suited the subtle shading you can achieve holding the Apple pencil at an angle.

The next session is inspired by Freud.

  • Fire Girl v Manet

    Fire Girl v Manet

More drinking and drawing in Blackburn, with more fire!

There’s to be an exhibition of Drink and Draw work at the Bureau in Blackburn, and I’m hoping to put a few finished pieces up, as well as some sketches.

    Classic poses at Studio 22b

Meanwhile at Studio 22b, life drawing has taken on the theme of classic paintings. At the last session two works by Manet were on offer with the classic poses from Dejuener sur l’Herb and Olympia on offer.

Interesting to note that Manet painted his Olympia from the side – wussing out on all the foreshortening I had to attempt here.

Next up at Studio 22b – Gauguin night

Life drawing with the brakes off

I decided to do away with pencils and other erasable media. For quick studies I’m going for pen and wash, for the longer poses a quick underline in blue follow by pen and wash. Hurrah for indelible mistakes!

  • Pole

    Pole

Pole dancing at Drink and Draw in Blackburn. Not for exercise or voyeurism, but as a subject for some frenzied life drawings. I took photos for the main performance pieces and it would have been very unfair to ask the ladies to hold a pose on the poles for longer than 30 seconds, but there was still plenty of energy in the sketches that made that night.

These versions have been produced in Manga Studio, based on the sketches – with the odd peek at photos to check finer detail. I’ve tried as much as possible to keep to the spirit of the sketch – it being all too easy to smooth the edges off and end up with something lifeless.

    And here are some photos…
