    Pencils

I’ve been inspired and done some more pencils for my comic, Freedom Scorned. Part of my inspiration came from watching Made You Look – an excellent documentary about illustrators and creatives using natural or pre-digital materials in their work.

Pencils are that part of the comic book workflow that’s most alive with possibility – where words on a page become a tiny world of their own. It’s definitely my favourite part of the process, it’s where all the problem solving gets done – a fluid state before the ink sets it all in stone.

Another batch of six pages will see this complete, bar the lettering and inking… and maybe a cover design… In the meantime, here’s a couple of pages of pencils, complete with a halloween-y Devil Girl.

  • Life Drawing in East Lancashire

    Life Drawing in East Lancashire

I love drawing people, it’s the best mental exercise there is – and there’s plenty of life drawing in East Lancashire to choose from.

Currently I’m going to two very different life drawing sessions.

AC Telfer life drawing at Studio22b

For the more formal (not formal like evening wear, I mean formal like nude) life drawing I’m attending studio 22b near Barnoldswick, which is a weekly get together with a nude model and hints and tips from AC Telfer. Drawing the nude is essential if you are going to draw people – clothing can be a distraction from understanding how a person is put together.

Meanwhile at Blackburn’s drink and draw, clothing, or rather costume, is all the rage, with dramatic themed evenings.

  • Angel Falls

    Angel Falls

Now this is a bit of an oddity. Angel Falls is a detail from a larger project, the beginnings of which you can see right here.

The brief was to come up with a label for imaginary bottled water company Angel Falls. Within the narrative the company brand had be old fashioned, and more than a bit sexist. The label needed to be low tech, hand drawn, and a bit tacky. I’d love to have real briefs like this.

In the end I spent a ridiculous amount of time on this illustration, considering that in the final comic it will be a tiny detail – a fact that means that this illustration is far too complex when reduced. I’ve since done a much simpler one for final use.

    Tour of Britain

The cycling tour of Britain came through Pendle last week, and I yomped up a hill to try and capture some of the action as they finished the crawl up Stoney Bank in Earby.

I’m no sports fan. I’ve found that I can’t watch sport, and even though I love cycling I find it a bit odd to watch other people doing it.
